TX Logistik launches new connection between Cologne and Bologna

December 8, 2020

Troisdorf, 08 December 2020 – TX Logistik AG (TXL) is expanding its range of rail freight services to Italy. On January 11, 2021, the Mercitalia Group company, which specializes in pan-European transport services, will launch its first intermodal service between Cologne and Bologna, with five round trips per week.

“It is a connection between two economic regions that offers our customers a completely new destination in Italy and at the same time strengthens our activities on the Swiss corridor,” says Gian Paolo Gotelli, CEO of TX Logistik. The route runs from the Cologne North terminal via the Gotthard axis to the Interporto Bologna terminal. The central location of Bologna in the heart of Italy allows easy access not only to the region of Emilia Romagna, but also to seaports such as Ravenna or Ancona on the Adriatic or Livorno on the Tyrrhenian Sea, as well as all surrounding regions such as Tuscany and Marche.

“The traction in Germany, Switzerland and Italy is handled entirely by TXL and its subsidiaries TX Switzerland and TX Logistik Transalpine, with their own drivers and modern multi-system locomotives,” adds Albert Bastius, COO of the company. Up to 34 loading units fit on the train. Semi-trailers, mega trailers, swap bodies and containers loaded with goods of all kinds are transported in both directions.

The motivation for the new rail product was not least the completion of the extension of the Gotthard axis. Since the timetable change in December, it is now possible to transport the semi-trailers with a height of four meters (P400), which are normally used in Europe, intermodally by rail through Switzerland. “This was not possible before and has significantly increased the interest of our customers for an offer on this route,” underlines Gian Paolo Gotelli. “We want to support the commercial exchanges between Italy and Germany in a green and sustainable way. Shifting to rail we are relieving the environment and saving around 28,000 tons of CO2 per year with our new connection”.
